Dermal Rolling

What is Derma Rolling / Microneedling?

Also known as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), Derma Rolling is a special regenerating treatment that penetrates deep into the underlying layers of skin to repair and rejuvenate troubled areas safely. The basis of this treatment comes from acupuncture, using multiple needles of different sizes to stimulate the natural wound healing process of your body. We target problematic areas of your skin to kick start its healing response. The resulting effect is production and distribution of new collagen. This treatment has been proven to treat help smooth over wrinkles, improve skin texture, eradicate stretch marks, and reduce unwanted scars. This a tried and tested procedure that has been in use for many years to help resolve issues with unwanted skin conditions. Common areas where this treatment can be administered are the face, hands, necks, chest, and back.

How Does Dermal Rolling Work?

Dermal Rolling is a safe, tested and reliable procedure that involves creating rejuvenating microscopic punctures in the skin using a specialised stainless steel roller or pressing mechanism. The process involves multiple needles in various sizes acting together in the specific area of the treated condition. This dermal roller treatment creates tiny punctures in the skin that encourage the production of new collagen, known as collagen induction, and will progressively fill in the scar, stretch mark, or wrinkles being treated, making them less noticeable and in some cases removing them altogether. Each patient’s situation is different and results can vary.

Other skin rejuvenating techniques utilise methods that can often remove the healthy top layer of skin. Dermal Rolling creates dermal stimulation without attacking the outer layer, maximising the outward appearance of the area and speeding up the healing process at a much faster rate than other procedures. The procedure is proven to offer many benefits and also avoids some of the usual skin care related worries that other procedures can possess, such as the risk of permanent structural damage, increased sun sensitivity, skin colour loss and hyper pigmentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

The procedure is ideal for treating a variety of skin concerns including:

  • Scarring
  • Acne Scarring
  • Wrinkles
  • Uneven tone
  • Pigmentation

The face is the most common area for skin treatments, but other areas of the body can benefit from skin needling just as effectively, including the hands, neck, back and chest. This makes it an excellent treatment for:

  • Stretch marks
  • Loss of elasticity

Before commencing, your technician will apply a topical anaesthetic cream to the area being treated. This will minimise skin sensitivity throughout the procedure, and the only sensation you should feel is some light pressure during the actual skin needling process.

If you have a darker skin tone, you may encounter more post-peel problems than those with lighter skin tones. Deeper peels on darker skin types must be considered with caution, so it may be better to perform a series of more superficial peels rather than one deep peel. Different skin problems also respond to particular peels. Acne, for example, responds well to our Jessner’s peel, as it is both oil-soluble and penetrates deeper into oily and clogged pores, removing dirt and sebum. Wrinkles are best treated with our ageless peel containing anabolic retinoid which corrects and enhances skin function for a long-term restructured and repairing effect. Choosing the right chemical peel for your specific skin problem means you’ll get more value from the cost of your treatment.

Visible dermal rolling results will usually require multiple sessions. Improvement in skin tone and texture will start to show within six to eight weeks and will continue to improve drastically in the following months, depending on what has been treated. After a series of procedures, a significant improvement will be noticeable, including smoother skin, improved skin tone, reduction of scars and pitting, improved texture of stretch marks, and a reduction in fine lines. Silk Medspa recommend anywhere between four to eight treatments as a general guideline, however, certain deeper skin problems may require additional sessions. Consult with us to formulate the best plan of action.
